🌊 Flow Guide
How to Find Your Flow
Flow is how your words sit on the beat: your rhythm, timing and pauses. It is the difference between reading lyrics and rapping them.
The Building Blocks of Flow
🥁 The pocket
Most hip-hop is in 4/4 time. Count “1, 2, 3, 4” over the beat and notice where the snare lands (usually 2 and 4). Landing key words near the snare makes bars hit harder.
🔢 Syllable density
More syllables per bar means a faster flow. Use the bar counter to see how many syllables each line has and keep them consistent.
⏸️ Pauses
Space is part of flow. Leaving a gap before a punchline makes it land.
Exercises That Work
- Rap over the same beat for a week. Try three different cadences on it: slow and spaced out, double-time, and a choppy start-stop flow.
- Mimic, then flip. Rap a verse you love exactly, then keep the rhythm but write your own words to it.
- Record and listen back. You will hear rushing and dragging that you can’t hear while rapping.
- Breathe on purpose. Mark where you will breathe in your lyrics so you never run out of air mid-bar.
- Switch it up. Changing your flow every 4 or 8 bars keeps a verse interesting.
