How to Tell Stories in Your Raps
Story raps make people feel like they were there. Here is how to structure a verse so listeners can see it and remember it.
Story Structure for a Song
Verse 1: Set the scene
Who, where and when. Use specific details: the street, the weather, what someone was wearing.
Verse 2: The conflict
Something goes wrong or changes. Build the tension and raise the stakes.
Verse 3: The outcome
How it ended and what it meant. A twist or a lesson makes it stick.
Tips That Make Stories Hit
- Show, don’t tell. Instead of “I was broke,” describe the empty fridge or counting change for gas.
- Use dialogue. Quoting what someone said brings characters to life.
- Keep the hook connected. The chorus should tie the verses together.
- Pick one point of view and stay in it, or switch on purpose for a twist.
- Cut what doesn’t move the story. Every bar should push it forward.
